The New School of Classical Art Atelier

The New School of Classical Art atelier focuses on the artistic principles of the 19th century academic tradition, 14th century Renaissance, and Classical Greek sculpture. The full-time curriculum consists of copying Bargue lithographs, drawing and painting antique casts, still life, figure, and portraiture. The New School Atelier was founded in 2005 by artist Dana Levin. An established portrait painter, her works are shown regularly in gallery exihibitions.

The curriculum is organized as a step-by-step program. These separate stages allow students to acquire the skills necessary in order to continue to the next project. This is why the atelier students must reach a certain level of proficiency with drawing before they move on to painting. In each assignment the atelier students are challenged to do their very best work.

Accurate drawing is the first priority for the academic-art student. However they are not only learning to make precise observations. Drawing from copies of antique classical sculpture is the best way atelier students can learn about traditionally classical ideas of beauty. Academic critiques are balanced with conversations about aesthetic choices in art. Today, with the growing interest in representational painting such as realist painting, classical realism, photo realism, contemporary realism, and naturalism, it is important to examine the choices we make in the art we create.

The atelier program is intended for serious students whose goal is to become professional oil painters. By the completion of the program, students can expect to be trained in figurative anatomy, portrait, still life, figure, floral, interior, and landscape oil painting techniques.

The New School of Classical Art is a painting atelier where students can build and refine their skills and techniques, challenge their abilities, and question their artistic choices. Click here for FAQs about the school program and the Pawtucket / Providence area.
